Fujifilm Announces GFX50S II - the Cheapest Digital Medium Format Camera Ever

  • 50

We had shared the news that Fujifilm is planning to launch GFX50S II medium format camera. Fujifilm announced the latest addition to the GFX medium format mirrorless line; the 51.4-megapixel GFX50S II. With the price of $3,999 it is by far the most affordable medium format camera.

The GFX50S II as claimed by the company is an optimal mix of accessibility and flexibility with a number of professional features including advanced autofocusing, 19 Film simulation modes and a variety of exposure controls. The camera features tiny, light-collecting micro lenses on its sensor that create a wide gap between adjacent pixels which is said to maximize light resolution per pixel, giving an increased sharpness to the image. This bigger light-receiving area gives a higher ISO sensitivity, accurate highlights and shadows and a wider dynamic range and tonality.

Featuring a five-axis in-body stabilization (IBIS), the camera offers up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction which is the highest, featured in the GFX line-up. The remarkable gyro sensor and the accelerometer provide the camera an increased sensitivity which is capable of detecting motion with a high accuracy, offering an improved image stabilization. All this opens up opportunities for handheld shooting where the previous cameras of the line were more suited for tripod shoots.

The GFX50S boasts the high-speed X-processor 4, along with algorithms for an accurate and fast contrast-detection autofocus system which, working in coordination with the IBIS controls motion blur and also improves the focus performance which includes the enhanced face and eye detection autofocus.

The camera weighs just 900 grams and measures 4.1 inches high and 3.4 inches deep, made from a highly rigid magnesium alloy with an enhanced grip shape to provide maximum comfort. Along with that, the GFX50S is also weather sealed at 60 locations and offers dust and moisture resistance, with the capability of functioning in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius.

Talking about the display, the GFX50S II boasts a 1.8-inch LCD monitor on its top panel which shows the EXIF settings, along with a rear 3.2 inch main LCD which is capable of tilting in 3 directions enabling low and high angle shooting, even in the situations where the electronic viewfinder cannot be used.

Additionally, the Fujifilm camera also features the Pixel Shift Multi-shot function which helps in creating 200MP images, majorly free of false color presentation, which makes it perfect for archiving large artworks and artifacts. The Pixel shift function shifts the image sensor by 0.5 pixels, by using the IBIS of the camera, in order to incrementally record 16 RAW files, while combining them into one single Digital Negative (DNG) RAW with Pixel Shift Combiner Software. The function can also be modified to produce 51.4MP images which are comparatively easier to handle.
