Panasonic has unveiled their new large-aperture prime lens for their full frame L-Mount, the S 35mm f/1.8. This is the fourth lens from the set of 4 prime lenses promised by Panasonic. Others are 24mm, 50mm and 85mm, which were launched in 2020.
Interestingly, the 35mm f/1.8 has the same center of gravity and front filter size as that of other three lenses. This will make it easy for photographers to change the lenses while using gimbal, without much re-adjustment and balancing. The lens has a front filter size of 67mm. It is lightweight, weighing just 295gms.
The lens comprises of 11 elements in 9 groups, including 3 aspherical elements and 3 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) elements. The aspherical elements will help in achieving fine details in images along with soft bokeh. The bokeh will be made softer by the use of 9-bladed aperture diaphragm. The ED optics will help reduce chromatic aberration. The lens has a close focusing distance of 0.24meters.
As per Panasonic, the AF motor in combination with contrast auto focus system will have fast auto focus with the sensor drive at a maximum of 240 frames per second.
The 35mm f/1.8 is designed keeping in mind video recording and is expected to perform best in that. It has minimal focus breathing which makes it suitable for video recording. You can smoothly change the exposure using its micro-step aperture control.
Along with this announcement, Panasonic has also announced firmware updates for their 70-200mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/4, 70-300mm f/1.4-5.6 and 24-105mm f/4 to improve their stabilization while doing video recording. Panasonic also announced the addition of another lens to this line up which is 18mm f/1.8. They however did not share any more details about it.
The Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 lens will be available around November end and should be priced at around Rs. 52500/-
