Nikon entered into a strategic partnership with intoPix, a company into high-end video compression solutions. Nikon will now leverage the intoPIX’s RAW compression technology, TicoRAW. As per the company, this new TicoRAW technology allows fast transfer rates up to 8K at 60FPS in RAW.
intoPix claims the new technology delivers most efficient RAW files without compromising image integrity. This is made possible because of innovative processing and coding.
TicoRAW reduces the bandwidth, storage needs and transfer times while preserving the full power of image sensor.
While the company was trying to incorporate this update at the time of camera launch but could not do so because of implementation issues. intoPix has confirmed that they have now successful implemented the same in the camera and Nikon will release it their 2022 firmware update.
As per intoPix, “TicoRAW is world’s first RAW codec, handling both RAW image and video files, that can offer compression efficiency without any complexities.
As per intoPix, the TicoRAW is capable of supporting huge resolutions from 1080p Full HD to 20K RAW.
Nikon Z9 is the first camera where this TicoRAW technology will be introduced. Company also says that they are open to rolling it out on other Nikon cameras as well. However, it is silent on associating with other camera brands also.
Few important aspects are still not clear, for example, how much compression will happen, will it change the processing workflow etc. Whatever may be the case; this seems to be an interesting feature update.
